BED BUGS
Dealing with Bed Bugs: What You Need to Know
Hitchhikers by Nature: Bed bugs are notorious hitchhikers. If you’ve been in an area where bed bugs are suspected, thoroughly check all your belongings before leaving to avoid bringing these pests home.
How Bed Bugs Get Into Your Home:
- Travel: Bed bugs can hitch a ride in your luggage, clothing, or personal items, entering your home unnoticed.
- Public Transportation: Buses, trains, and taxis can harbour bed bugs, which may attach themselves to your clothes or bags during your commute.
- Second-Hand Furniture: Used furniture, especially beds and upholstered items, can be infested with bed bugs hiding in crevices and folds.
- Visiting Infested Places: If you visit a place with a bed bug infestation, you might inadvertently bring them back on your clothing or belongings.
Why Bed Bugs Are a Problem: Bed bugs are parasitic insects that feed exclusively on blood and are primarily active at night. They are attracted to the warmth of your body and prefer to stay close to their food source—your bed. They often infest mattresses, bases, headboards, and skirtings, leaving tell-tale signs such as dried spots of excrement.
Health Risks: Bed bug bites can cause itching and scratching, and in some cases, lead to serious allergic reactions requiring medical attention. Bed bugs typically bite the middle and upper sections of the body.
Professional Treatment: We handle bed bug infestations in guest houses, hotels, and backpacker lodges daily. It’s crucial to act immediately, as bed bugs can quickly lay hundreds of eggs in fabric seams and hide in dark crevices.
Preparation for Treatment:
- Strip Beds: Remove all bedding before treatment.
- Clean Bedding: Wash all bedding in strong, hot soapy water; dry cleaning is highly recommended.
- Vacate the Room: Leave the room during and after treatment for at least 2 hours or until the mattress is dry.
Important Note: Bed bugs are not a sign of dirtiness or poor hygiene. They are opportunistic pests seeking a blood meal and can be found in both clean and cluttered spaces.
